With the unprecedented health crisis that hit the world at the close of 2019 caused by the Coronavirus that led to a global pandemic a.k.a. COVID-19 that dramatically changed the way we live and do businesses around the world, creating severe social and economic consequences for all. The impacts cut across value chains and countries globally. Nigeria not being excluded was also hit tremendously. The lockdowns period affected economic activities, leading to massive job losses and supply chain disruptions within the economy. Perhaps, the most challenging economic downslide in our nation’s record, same goes to the global economy facing its excruciating turnaround in ages.
The New Normal is here! The post-COVID-19 era and the business environment is witnessing drastic shift, so adopting alternative business models including the use of disruptive technologies to stay alive and ahead in business is key for now. And the potential for Cooperatives as an alternative business model increasing their contribution in the socio-economic development of Nigeria is huge and cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, Cooperative Societies are to be encouraged to start up new activities or to further expand their existing businesses via digital transformation strategies to create more jobs and employments, alleviate poverty and boost socio-economic growth to help salvage and cushion the severe impacts of COVID-19 while rebuilding back better.
Consequently, the disruptive nature of the global pandemic on economies and businesses has highlighted the need for strengthening cooperatives as development actors with enhanced principle and value-based operations, ensuring a well standardized best practice, good governance and the development of the subsector at all levels, which has now made it imperative to further sensitize and create awareness to the larger public and re-orientate the key stakeholders in the Cooperative ecosystem of Nigeria.
Hence, our theme for this year’s event – “The Cooperative Stakeholders: Synergizing for Cooperative Growth & Development in this New Normal” and its major tagline – “#TheCoopStakeholders” as a clarion call, geared towards mobilizing and sensitizing all major stakeholders within the Cooperative subsector in Nigeria to come rebuild better together post COVID-19. Synergizing to promote, develop and ensuring growth and sustainability of the cooperative business model as we sail through the new normal, achieving a better economy for our nation.
